Planning

In the UK, we have some of the least energy-efficient homes in Europe. But the good news is that improving your home can make it warmer, healthier, and cheaper to run – all while contributing to a more sustainable future for everyone.

The 12 A House Like Mine case studies are designed to help you get started by showing what’s possible for homes like yours. They were created using a Whole House Plan approach – a step-by-step whole house strategy to improve energy efficiency and work towards achieving an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of C or better.

Each case study provides:

  • A tailored Whole House Plan outlining energy-saving measures for a specific home.
  • Practical guidance on the order of improvements to maximise efficiency and save money over time.
  • Insights into the costs and benefits of each measure, including estimated energy savings and carbon reduction.

The case studies take a fabric-first approach, focusing on measures to reduce heat loss (like insulation) before upgrading heating systems. This method ensures your energy needs are lower, allowing you to install smaller, more cost-effective heating systems.

  1. Find a case study that matches your property type.
While no two homes are exactly the same, you can find inspiration by exploring the case study of a home similar to your own.
  2. Understand the phased approach.
Retrofitting doesn’t have to be done all at once. The case studies show how smaller measures – like draught-proofing or upgrading a single room – can make an immediate difference while setting the stage for larger improvements later.
  3. Consider the benefits of retrofitting.
    • Save money on energy bills: A more efficient home costs less to run.
    • Improve comfort and health: Warmer, draught-free homes are healthier and more enjoyable to live in.
    • Add value to your property: Energy-efficient homes are more attractive to buyers.
  4. Use the case studies as a guide, not a rule book.
Every home is unique. The plans shown in the case studies provide a framework, but your own home improvement journey should be tailored to your needs, budget, and goals.

  • Check if you’re eligible for financial support. Learn more about grants and financial support available for retrofitting, particularly for those on lower incomes or living in the least efficient homes. Learn more: Grants and financial support for retrofitting.
  • Think long term. Retrofitting is an investment that pays off over time – through lower bills, a more comfortable home, and added property value.
  • Plan your upgrades carefully. The case studies highlight why the order of improvements matters. Tackling insulation first, for example, can reduce your overall energy needs, making other upgrades more effective and affordable.
  • Take small steps. Start with simple measures like draught-proofing or room-by-room insulation to see immediate benefits while planning larger upgrades for the future.

  2. Create your own plan
Start with a free advice tool to assess your property’s current energy performance and identify potential improvements. Get a snapshot of what’s possible for your home, but remember – a whole house energy assessment is the best way to ensure any upgrades work together effectively. Without a full plan, individual measures may not deliver the best results or could even work against each other.
