Tackling extreme mould in a semi-detached house in Headington

Tina, Richard, and their children live in a semi-detached home in a typical Oxford suburb. A few years ago, they decided to undergo a whole house eco renovation to reduce their energy consumption and tackle severe damp and mould problems that were affecting their comfort and health.

The house had long been plagued by cold walls, draughts from the floorboards, and fluctuating temperatures – issues common in older homes with poor insulation. Initially, their primary goal was to reduce their energy bills, but as the project progressed, they discovered how much of a difference these home improvements made to the overall comfort of their property. They not only improved energy efficiency but also addressed the root causes of the persistent damp and mould.

“The house is definitely more thermally comfortable – without raising the internal temperature settings. The walls aren’t cold anymore, there are no draughts from the floorboards, and the temperature remains constant.

Even at the coldest part of winter, we can leave our central heating off overnight, and room temperatures will only drop by two or three degrees.”
