The Green Homes Grant has been scrapped
31 March 2021
The Green Homes Grant is now closed and longer taking applications, as of 31 March 2021. Any applications already submitted will still be progressed.
The Green Homes Grant was a scheme offering vouchers of up to £5,000 (£10,000 for low income households) for householders to make certain retrofit improvements to their homes.
Why has the scheme been scrapped?
There have been significant issues with the Green Homes Grant for both homeowners and retrofit contractors. Particularly, the administration of the scheme has meant that it has been extremely difficult to access vouchers, and contractors have experienced delays to payments which has been damaging for their businesses. The government’s press release highlights that delivery challenges have been exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic.
At the last release of data 123,500 vouchers had been applied for, with just 28,300 of these approved, and only 2,900 actually paid. This means that actual payouts under the scheme have been £17.6 million – of an original fund of £2 billion.
