Heat pump FAQ: How loud is a heat pump?
Like many homeowners in the UK, you might be considering a heat pump for your home. But how loud is it compared to your current heating system? Let’s dive in and find out.
We often get asked by homeowners like you about the noise levels of heat pumps, with many worried about whether the sound will disturb them – or even the neighbours. The good news is that there’s usually little to worry about.
“Think of a heat pump like your fridge, only working in reverse. It’s familiar technology, just used differently.”
Geordie Stewart, Retrofit Scheme Manager
How loud is an air source heat pump?
All heating systems make some noise, but heat pumps are generally quieter than traditional fossil fuel boilers. So, how loud do you think a heat pump really is?
- As quiet as a fridge? (Around 40–50 decibels)
- Like an air conditioning unit? (Around 50–60 decibels)
- Or louder than a washing machine? (Above 70 decibels)
For most homes, an air source heat pump will be more like a quiet fridge or air conditioning unit. At 40 decibels, it’s about the sound of light rain, while 60 decibels is similar to normal conversation levels. So, even when it’s working hard, it won’t be disruptive. Most of the noise is generated outside, and chances are, you won’t hear it from inside your home – and neither will your neighbours.
What about ground source heat pumps?
Ground source heat pumps are even quieter, with sound levels comparable to a domestic fridge – around 42 decibels. If you’re inside your home, it’s unlikely you’ll notice the noise at all.
Will installing a heat pump make my home more efficient?
Absolutely. Heat pumps can achieve efficiency levels up to three times higher than a gas boiler. But to unlock this efficiency, it’s important to look at the bigger picture. A heat pump on its own won’t work wonders if your home is losing heat through poor insulation or old windows.
